How much water does my lawn need?
Most lawns need about one inch of water per week. However, when temperatures are high, the
requirement goes up. Organic soils need less water while sandy soils generally need more.
Temperature, length of grass blade, evaporation, shade and wind will affect your lawns
needs.

How often should I water?
It is best to water infrequently for a long period of time, than frequently for short
periods. Watering infrequently provides deep water sources that roots search for, while
frequent watering promotes surface root growth.

What time of day is best to water?
Kaye Brothers recommends watering in the early hours of the morning, so that the blades of
grass dry off by night time. Grass blades left wet overnight are susceptible to fungus.
Watering during the middle of the day is acceptable if you have a newly installed lawn.

How long should I water?
The length of watering time is determined by how fast your sprinklers apply water. To
measure this, put pans in your yard and water for 15 minutes. Measure the water depth and
multiply by 4. This is how much water is being applied per hour. When lawn shows signs of
stress you should apply 3/4" of water, and then do not apply more water until lawn
shows signs of stress again.

How can I tell when my lawn needs
watering?
Look for signs such as curling grass blades, a bluish-gray color, or footprints left in
the lawn for a period of time after walking on it.
